The story behind "Last Hurrah"

Hubert Karl has been one of the most influential German ultra-runners for over four decades. More than 200,000 kilometers run, 25 successful participations in the legendary Spartathlon, and some of the toughest long-distance races in the world form the sporting background of "Last Hurrah".

In January 2026, the film accompanies the then 67-year-old Lower Franconian to the Brazil 135. The run covers around 240 kilometers and 7,500 meters of altitude through Brazil. For Hubert Karl, it is the last missing piece of his personal "Big Five" – five extraordinary non-stop ultra-runs over 200 kilometers.

But the film by director Julian Zimmermann is not just about kilometers, meters of altitude, and exhaustion. It shows Hubert at home, with his wife Christine, and in his garden. It gets close to the person behind the endurance performance and the question of what a life looks like in which running is not a show, but a daily conviction.

"In a time when extreme sports are increasingly becoming commercial shows, Hubert Karl shows the absolute opposite. Running is not his content – it's his life."

Why "Last Hurrah" belongs on the big screen

The current running boom has inspired a new generation for marathons, trail running, and ultra-running. At the same time, the longing for credible stories and people whose performance was not created for a few seconds of attention is growing.

Hubert Karl stands for consistency, experience, and a very personal form of endurance sports. The film combines this life story with the immediate images of an extreme race. In 4K and with 5.1 sound, this creates a cinema experience that works far beyond the running community.

This was already shown at the premiere on June 5, 2026, at the Capitol Cinema in Zeil am Main: More than 300 guests traveled to several screenings. The full hall and the audience's reactions were the starting point for the now planned cinema tour.
